The Department of Chemical Engineering of SUT was founded in 1994. Since then, with the collaborative efforts of our people, the Department has experienced great developments in discipline construction. The department has the qualification for granting Doctoral Academic Degree in Functional Materials as secondary discipline, Degree of Master in Chemical Engineering and Technology as primary discipline, Engineering Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering and Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Chemistry. In 2017, the Chemical Engineering and Technology primary discipline obtained a C+ in the fourth National Assessment for Higher Education of China. The achievement obtained in discipline construction has made the department into an important base for chemical research and talent fostering in the northeast region of China. Currently, there are 26 faculty and staff members, including 6 professors, 11 associate professors, 2 senior engineers and 7 lecturers. In addition, the department has more than 10 external teachers (including an Outstanding Young Investigator of National Science Foundation of China) playing the roles as double hired professors, part-time professors and supervisors of our graduate students. The department has advantageous experiment facilities, teaching environment and academic atmosphere. The department has 1 Provincial Key Laboratory for Catalytic Synthesis Technology of Polymer, 1 Provincial Chemical Experiment Demonstration and Teaching Center for undergraduates, 1 Provincial Laboratory for Advanced Polymer Engineering and 2 Provincial Joint Training Base for graduate students. Meanwhile, the department has established partnership with some Germany and Japanese university and institutes for cooperative training projects. The department has hosted 8 State funded projects, 30 projects funded by Liaoning provincial government and other sponsored projects. Meanwhile, the department has been won more than 10 awards in science and technology and granted more than 50 patents, and the project fund obtained from cooperation with enterprises was more than 10,000,000 each year. Moreover, the department has published more than 200 papers in Dalton Trans., Carbon and Inorg. Chem., among which more than 100 are SCI and EI indexed. At present, there are more than 500 students, including approximately 100 graduate students for PhD and Master (some of them are international students).
At undergraduate level, the department opens a major in Applied Chemistry, which mainly trains advanced applied talents of engineering and technology with strong practical skills, comprehensive qualities, innovative spirit and competitive awareness in the fields of Applied Electrochemistry, Fine Chemical Engineering and Applied Polymers. Professional courses including basic courses: Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Principle of Chemical Engineering, Design of Chemical Engineering, etc; Electives special courses in different professional directions: Paint and Coatings, Electrochemical Principles, Chemical Power, Polymer Chemistry, Fine Organic Synthesis Chemistry and Technology, Principle and Technology of Polymer Synthesis, etc; as well as following "Emerging Engineering Education" philosophy, the department sets up multi-level systematic practice sections including Design Type of Experiment, Curriculum Design, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training, Internship and Graduation Thesis etc.

In the graduate level training, besides mastering Dialectics of Nature and Mathematics, master graduate students need to master the basic theory and systematic professional knowledge of this discipline. The main courses include Advanced Organic Chemistry, Advanced Physical Chemistry, Advanced Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, Chemical Reaction Engineering, Polymer Reaction Principle, Modern Analysis and Test Technology etc. According to the needs of the research direction, the selection will be made for relevant degree courses, professional basic courses and the corresponding professional elective courses. All courses are taught by teachers with relevant professional background and research or the business experience.

In accordance with the development of chemical disciplines and social demand, the department engages our construction of four preponderant disciplines into our postgraduate education. This helped us achieve great scientific accomplishments.
Polymer synthesis and Application Technology: Successful development of new environment-friendly and high activity olefin polymerization catalysts such as late transition metal catalyst and Ziegler-Natta catalysts; Dedication to preparing organic/inorganic nanocomposite through connecting olefin polymer catalysts to silicates and functional materials to expand the application fields of functional polymer materials; Applied research solid polymer electrolyte membranes for lithium ion battery; Success in starch modification by way of combining molecule design with special processing theories, such as our success development of several dozen varieties of starch for enterprises.

Materials Preparation and Functionalization: Committed to the design work on composition and structure of metal coordination polymer, to carry out the design and synthesis of nano-functional materials and performance research and development. Some good results have been successfully obtained in research and application of microwave absorbing properties and photocatalytic properties via structural improvement and optimization of functional materials.

Material chemistry and surface technology: committed to the preparation and surface modification of powders and the development of high performance, high value-added new materials; carried out the research in metal corrosion mechanism and metal anti-corrosion technology; successfully developed a series of electric brush plating solution and related technologies products and widely used in electronic and electrical areas, machinery, aviation and other fields.
